I have an old laptop, with an intel i5 450M processor and the first-generation Intel HD graphics.

The short version is you need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable and then update it with a security update. I had the same problem, but was able after TWO DAYS of trying to finally get the newest iTunes installed on my system.
